In conjunction with the World Holy Names Week, I conducted a class on Glories of Holy Names in the Ladies prison in Kajang to 50 enthusiastic inmates. Many of them are already chanting and today few of them related how the Holy Names has helped them immensely. Former Medical student Nirmala (not her real name) , remanded for a murder charge recounted how from someone who never believed or practiced any form of religion or spirituality today finds peace and hope when she chants Holy Names.
Punitha (not her real name), who went on from a remand inmate to convicted inmate tells she found herself feeling protected and safe whenever she chants. She chants 20 rounds everyday and has said that she wants to visit the Temple once she is out. She also said , how the Holy Names enabled her to forgive the person who wronged her and she has been praying for the person who got her involved in the drugs offence!
The Holy Names are so powerful that it does not require any form of rules or regulations to be followed prior to chanting. So much of purification has taken place where now some inmates are also fasting for Ekadasis, and are reading Srila Prabhupada’s books in the prison. Nila (not) her real name is a remand inmate for a murder offence, was having voices in her head bur after chanting the Maha Mantra she says the voices dissapeared and she too finds temendous solace and hope after chanting for more than a year now. Personally it was an inspiring day for me today. Hearing from other distresed souls on how the chanting helps them reinforces and increases our faith in the Holy Names.
